Hey J & E---I want to get in on the 100 comments. C & I had a wonderful time in Seattle with Em, the scenery, mild temp, food, sights, water, etc. All 8 hours were great. Yesterday in church there was a sharing time for things we are grateful for. I thought to myself that one of those things for me is the spiritual growth & maturity I've seen in my 3 children in the last year. Even though I miss you two so much, I know that you are having life changing experiences, God is working in your life & changing you and people there are deeply benefitting from the work you're doing. Take some time to get some rest. Love, Mom

I love your Blog, guys. Thanks for the effort to keep us updated. Emily--It was so great to see you for a little while in Seattle. Johnny--We missed you a lot. At our lovely Sat. evening dinner, looking out over the bay, we definitely felt like we were cruising. But we wished you could have been there, too. Loved your phone message, with Johnny emphasizing the "important" points in the background! Can hardly wait to see you both on August, which isn't that far away, any more.

Congratulations, you two! As always, I respect and admire the work you're doing. You are certainly entitled to a celebration and thank you for inviting me.

Actually, I feel like I'm in MS. The temperature has gone over 100F for the second day in a row. Pilsener Urquell in a frosted mug helps out, though.

The cats all say hello.

J&E-- We love you and miss you, as usual, but are proud of the work you are doing there in M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I. Isn't it finally fun to live in the state that's the most fun to spell? Okay, well, here's our comment.... you are going to reply individually to each comment, right? THAT would be amazing indeed.
Love from Boston, JALS

Hey you guys,
This is Erik from Sea-town. I just wanted to get in on this movement at the ground level. And Johnny, I won't make fun of your beard. Nay, far from it. Your beard is fierce and unruly and reminds me of musk. And congrats on the blog being up and running for one whole year. I don't think I've ever kept anything up for one whole year. And I definitely look forward to your newsletter. Do you have my address still? If you don't I'll email it to you. Alright, I hope the next year of blogging brings more of the witty banter and poigniant moments that we have all come to love.

Hey Emily & Johnny!!!

I miss you and the kids and everyone so very much. I want to hear all about whats going on in Jackson. I know that its not possible for you all to write me personalized emails all the time telling me about how everything is... but then Elizabeth just reminded me that I should check your blog for updates... and I thought to myself "oh I should have remembered that... well now I will." So hurray for your blog and make sure you update it fairly often!!!! I know that you will that is if the summer camp isn't too much for you. ;)
Miss y'all. Tell the kids I said "Hi"!!!!

Hooray for blogs! I love you guys and miss you a lot. I'm sorry I never came to visit. I am a slacker in all things and, I suppose, will never amount to anything in the history of Hill Valley. Take care, and keep updating! Even thought I feel like I never have anything to say, and so don't leave many comments, I want you to know that I check this page several times daily. I really appreciate you putting forth the effort to keep in touch.

Loving you lots forever,

Hey, folks, just thought I'd share a few words about Johnny. He helped me over one of the worst days of my life (and believe me, I've had a lot of 'em).

When I moved from my old house on Division Street, I thought I had a place set up. Unfortunately, the fellow I had rented it from sold the new house out from under me, and hadn't yet cashed my check. Talk about a sudden change of plans!

It still shouldn't have been that bad. I found a new house and lined up a moving crew. But one guy never showed up and the driver got kept over at his job (they can do mandatory overtime at his company). He was too exhausted to stay for very long. It was also the hottest day of the year in Portland.

Johnny worked his butt off and we got the job done. That's the kind of mensch he is.

JALS, Yeah emily turned 25 last thursday. She's a riot! I love her very much. I really want you all to see this picture of us on her birthday. We went out to dinner and dressed up a bit. She looked stunning in a green dress. I wore a a tie and looked like a mix between an amish man, mountain man , and early eighties style nerd. Unfortunatly when I loaded the pictures onto my computer they showed up as corrupted and now I cant open them. All my ZOO and birthday photos are messed up right now. Computer nerds I need you now, help me your my only hope!

Just thought i should get in on the excitement...
In the spirit of the party, I'll tell a story of our 4th of July last night. Well, Johnny and I got these great seats at the Mississippi Braves baseball game-- two rows up on the first base line. Anyway, this ballpark girl approaches us and asks us to join her after the inning for a participatory dance on top of the dugout. I laughed it off and said we weren't interested. Then JOHNNY yells "I'll do it!" I then had to ask myself, WWJD (what would Jacinda do:) I'm all about making myself uncomfortable these days, so I said "what the h***." It was awful...the chicken dance. Cameras were filming us in all of our foolishness but I was able to let the pride go and surrender to flapping my wings and shaking my bootie (for what seemed like forever). I forgot about the whole thing until this morining at camp. One by one students and counselors came up to me saying "I heard about last night" "My dad saw you on the big screen" "I thought you were a vegetarian...(the chicken dance)" ect. One guy even said we were on the news. So much for getting out of my comfort zone...never again!!!
e

Anonymous said...

WOW, ERB, where can we get that video footage? Was the last time you did that dance at a DDHS spirit week assembly....oh, you probably didn't let it fly back then! We really hope you can access those pics, JB; remember, Cob's brother owns a computer shop in Gresham....I bet he'd have an idea for you on recovering those. We love you both

Anonymous said...

Em, That is so histerically funny... I'm sorry I missed that... I mean being there to dance with you!!! :) Not that I would have wanted to at first, but I would have done it and loved it. :)

See you in Philly!!!

Matt Basinger said...

Today for my lunch time party blogs I'll give a couple real brief book reviews of three books I've recently read that Johnny and Emily gave to me or recommended.

Matt Basinger said...

The Irresistible Revolution : Living as an Ordinary Radical
by Shane Claiborne

This book was a joy to read, despite how much it challenged me. Shane articulates so many important and thoughtful concepts on living like Christ in a real meaninful and intentional way. His personal stories provide colorful illustrations, and his humility is refreshing. This is a very fast read and I recommend it to everyone from the "dissolusioned-born-into-the-evangelical-church-but-now-questioning-things-type-person" all the way to the "Bush-is-the-Messiah-and-you-have-be-a-gun-owning-American-republican-to-go-to-heaven-type-person" ... both extremes and everything in between can find pearls of wisdom in this book.

Matt

Matt Basinger said...

Let Justice Roll Down
by John Perkins

This book was such a valuable book for me to read, to gain access to the incredible history of the life of John Perkins. I was shocked and appalled by the unthinkable hate crimes and racism that John, his family, and friends were subject to, and I was deeply challenged by his response. I loved reading it and feeling like I was really getting to hear JP's voice.

Matt

Matt Basinger said...

At Home with the Poor
by Jean Thomas

Ok, so I'm only 2/3 of the way through this book...but I still wanted to promote this wonderful read. This book is great because it shows how JP's 3R's are applicable and effective outside the US. Jean's account of his life in Haiti makes me long for the day when Jacinda and I can finally move to Indonesia (or where ever it is we move to outside the US). And the integrity through which Jean puts together programs and builds relationships is wonderful. I am a bit discouraged though at his advantage of being from Haiti...I hope that where ever Jacinda and I end up we aren't held back too much by the fact that we were born and grew up somewhere else, etc.

I wanted to chime in about the dmethod show memory...that was the first time I really met Johnny and Emily, and you guys were so kind and hospitable. After a few hours I really felt like we had already been friends before and we had just come to visit you as though we'd done it several times before.

Also, that night at the pub yielded one of the best quotes I've ever heard about imbibing alcohol (Hair of the Dog really is the best, despite/because of its high alcohol content) -- I made some comment about feeling kind of tipsy, and I asked Matt -- a notorious lightweight -- how he felt, and he replied "I just feel like I'm ... not in my body."

I never thought we'd get this far! It may only be a few more days before we reach our goal of 100. Be sure to get in the fun!

Matt, so glad that you've been able to read those three books!

Alicia, thanks for the memories. Speaking of new years remember the year that we were at the keyes house and young brody was asleep at midnight and i ran into the room where he was sleeping because I wanted to be the first one to see him in the new year and then stephanie got really mad at me. That was great.

Joel, your quote of Matt made me laugh. I remember Matt sleeping very well that night. Hopefully we can all meet up again sometime at the Horsebrass pub.

Emily's story about the chicken dance failed to mention that it was the largest crowd i've ever seen at a braves game, in fact it was a sell out. Good times on big screens......

thanks for your comments

Hey, this is Erik Evenson coming in again from Sea-town...
Alright, in the spirit of creating lists, I have decided to list the funniest lines that Johnny has ever said. Many of these are from back in the day when Boise, Idaho was the center of the universe, so it might be a walk down memory lane for a few people. These very well could be the funniest lines ever uttered by a human being, but let's not get ahead of ourselves...and I'm sorry if everyone doesn't get all of these, but not really because it's your fault. You just had to be there. Alright, here they are in no particular order:

Anonymous said...

1. Hey, hey Paula!

Anonymous said...

2. Money for sports

Anonymous said...

3. Oh yeah, you bet! (in the funniest old man voice you've ever heard)

Anonymous said...

4. So, I'm chasing the otter and her pups...God knows I love that dog...(Yes, technically this is a movie quote, but it still counts).

Anonymous said...

5. (Speaking as a movie critic in a perfect English accent that would make any Blue-Blooded Brit jealous): And this is the film, Tiramic, starring Leonardo DiCrapio

Anonymous said...

6. Be careful. You'll roll it. (this was Johnny warning anyone who had the dubious responsibility of driving their car down this steep hill with a sharp curve to get to my house in Boise. You really could roll your car if you weren't careful...seriously, you could.)

Anonymous said...

7. (this is an anecdotal soliloquy spoken in the intense voice of Nakano driving school's own Mr. Doty while we were learning how to drive):
So, we're driving along and I says to Billy, "Billy, take a left here." And Billy says to me, "I lika de Tiger." So I says to Billy, "Education is the key!" (Yes, this one is really random. But if you were one of the lucky few on this earth to know who Mr. Doty was, you'd know why it was so funny.)

Alright, that's all I can think of at the moment. Keep the funny quotes coming, Johnny.

I was thinking...since this IS a party, every party needs food. (Or maybe its just the fact that I check this blog during my lunch break and so I'm always hungry.)

I think it would be fun for those that are interested to vote on, or list their favorite or least favorite foods? (Especially those foods that have some connection with Johnny & Emily.) I'll get things started:

Matt Basinger said...

Veggitarian Cuisine:
Boca or Morningstar?

Matt Basinger said...

Morningstar gets my vote
It seems to have the coolest variety, and is cheaper.
(But boca is ok too)

I knew and gave chiropractic treatments to the founder of Gardenburger, Paul Wenner, back in the day when he was a struggling vegetarian recipe experimenter, so I'm a little biased. Plus it's fun to be a name-dropper once in a while. He was/is a really nice guy, but I never imagined how far he would go. Should have signed on as his personal physician. How different my life could have been!
DaddyM

Johnny said...

I have to vote for gardenburger here as well. Love the portabella mushroom one.

But my lunch today tops them all: vegie corndogs. oh I love these.
Every time I eat them I fantasize about having all my friends over and making a bunch of them and then feeding them to my friends, not mentioning that they were vegetarian corndogs. then at the end of the night ( after all the good wine was gone) I would suprise them by saying, " hey those awesome corndogs that we ate earlier, they were vege dogs!" And evryone would be so happy and shocked and excited.

I think about wierd things sometimes. just try them and you'll see what I mean.

Johnny said...

Erik, you cracked me up!

I totally forgot about Mr. Doty.
I also forgot that every time we drove down that hill by your house I warned you of rolling the beatle. ( You really could roll it...no really you could)

Em, So you remember that someone from church used to take the kids on a sort of fieldtrip each week or so during the summer? And I remember your dad took us to the Gardenburger place, and we got to sample them. I think that day can be pegged as your Vegetarian roots. I also remember touring that 7UP factory in Portland and the Trojan nuclear plant.... do you remember any other places? A from JALS

Johnny - My mom has done the veggie trick to my friends on multiple occasions! Even to the same people more than once. The dogs are a bit harder to pull off, but the Morningstar chicken nuggets get them every time! I recommend you trying it on a few people!

This comment is in response to you next entry "Update!" But I wanted to post it here, to keep the party going on...you're so close to reaching 100!

Great pictures from Emily's 25 - you a beautiful couple...and I too am fortunate that the nerd gets the girl in the end.

The porch light incedent sounds pretty crazy...I'll post another comment about a similar incident that happened to me a few years back.

Will you guys be doing anything special next week once the camp get's over, to celebrate? Not to celebrate that its over, but just all the hard work you guys have put in? I hope so, you deserve it.

Matt

Matt Basinger said...

In response to the porch light story...

Back one summer when I was in college I was staying at a large (6 bedroom 3 bathroom) house in Bellevue Washington all by myself for about a month. The house was the parsonage of the church I was attending. I had been in Ecuador for an internship for the first part of the summer, and was going to come back and live in the basement of the parsonage for the last month of the summer. The youth pastor and his wife lived upstairs. But while I was in Ecuador the youth pastor suddenly resigned. So the house was empty when I arrived.

Very creepy at night - no furniture, nothing. Just big, echo-y and creepy.

It was also right next to a major road and a firestation. So there were regularly lights and sirons in the middle of the night.

Just before the youth pastor had left he had installed a security system. He told me how to use it, but I didn't think I needed it so I didn't pay attention and figured I'd just leave it off.

One night at about 3am I woke up suddenly. I heard a loud alarm like sound and saw what looked like alarm lights...

"Was this the security system going off?!!!" I thought. "Is the house being broken into?!!!"

I was so freaked out I could barely move. But I got out of bed very quietly. I listened.

Nothing.

I took a step outside the room I slept in, in the basement. I figured that if someone was in the house, maybe they didn't know I was there, so maybe I could intimidate them with a loud deep, scary voice...then maybe they'd leave.

"You better get out of this house right now!!" I yelled in the deepest, most manly, angriest voice I could. (Which probably wasn't that scary seeing how scared I was.)

I did this a couple more times.

Not a sound in return.

I waited what seemed like an eternity for any sound. Nothing.

Gathering a little more courage I crept up the stairs to where the security system was...I figured I better disarm it before the police were contacted.

That's strange. The security system wasn't on. Or maybe it was, I couldn't really be sure. Man, I wished I had paid closer attention to the instructions of using this darn system.

Then I looked outside and saw a police car go by with its sirons on. And a fire truck...

Could I have just heard a firetruck and thought it was the security system? I wasn't sure, but I felt a little better. And a little silly.

I crept back to bed and tried to force myself to go back to sleep. I was still scared, but after about 20 minutes I fell back to sleep.

In the morning when I woke up I walked around the house in the light. Obviously no one had broken in. It had just been a police car and fire-engine combined with my own fears and sleepy mind playing tricks on me.

Well, sein' as how I've got two cats and sometimes three sleeping here, I've gotten used to things tht go bump in the night. If a Charlie Manson wannabe or Bush's Fatherland Security wakes me up by crashing in here, I'll probably assume it's Fuzz doing her death-defying "Leap from the top of the TV" and go back to sleep.

E & J---this party's a lot of fun! Don't forget to mark your drink so no one drinks out of your glass. Don't forget to get some rest too. You sound over worked. We love you and are proud of you.

next week we will have some r&r but we will also be preparing for our up coming after school program which will begin on Aug. 7th.

today i went golfing by myself and holed a 30 yard chip for birdie on the forth hole. With nobody around to witness my greatness I pretended I had just made that shot on the 18th hole at the british open. i walked to hole, picked up my ball and kissed it before throughing it in to the crowd. ( aka the next tee box)

KTB- did you get tickets? my family loves me! they are coming to Mississippi in August ( hottest time of the year). They really love me!!!!
cant wait to see you.

OHMYGOODNESS!!!!!!! I'm so excited to be the 100th caller! Do I get a cash prize, or maybe a random cantaloupe, or overripe squash?! Something? Anything?! Okay, I will accept your undyin glove. Oh, that would be undying love ( I'm all set with gloves and really would rather have the love anyway, thank you.) So, well, I wish I had the imagination or stories of Matt, the thoughtfulness of Paka, or the wit of JB, but alas, the 100th entry is just a boring little blip. Did I already mention the multiple times Em and I snuck out and went skinny dipping? Or when we decided to do the skinny dipping thing in the middle of Timothy Lake and dropped our suits and she caught hers, but mine's still there? I'm sure I did.... well, if not, another time then.......

Hey y'all, I cannot believe that it's been a year since ya split the Portland and Providence scene, and i'm sure there are those who have been better at keeping in touch than I, so surely you know what's up in Stumptown. I've been in awe of your' accomplishments and energy for your calling and know, whatever your kids are getting, you are enjoying even more from your' experience. I will surely try to get to your "recital" this weekend, have been rather busy with home projects (see blog) but will deserve and be ready for a little break. our blog; rinehartlife.blogspot.net. While it's not profound, or life inspiring, it's us and our little experience. See ya this w/e. Bill the "Janitor" in CT
